In this night in July, just you and I,
And fragrant, intoxicating jasmines,
Come, let us wander together -
The moon above us, and silver shadows,
Shadows, and secret, starry worlds,
In this perfumed night, just you and I,
Among bewitching jasmines
In the last years of her life, the composer returned to the poetry of her husband, Narcyz. On a moonlit night in July, with jasmine trees abloom, there’s only you and I... This is the art song that defines for all time the love between Stefania and Narcyz
STEFANIA TURKEWICH (1898-1977)
Ukraine’s first woman composer is Stefania Turkewich. She, too, began her music studies with her mother, a pupil of Mikuli. Then at the Lysenko Institute she continued under the tutelage of Barvinsky. After World War I, Turkewich studied with Adolf Chybiński at Lviv University and at the conservatory there; with Guido Adler at the University of Vienna and Joseph Marx at the music academy there. In 1925, she went with her first husband to Berlin where she studied with Franz Schreker and Arnold Schoenberg; and to Prague where she studied with Zdeněk Nejedlý at Charles University, receiving her doctorate in musicology in 1934, and with Otakar Šín at the conservatory and Vítězslav Novák at the music academy there. From 1935 to 1939, she taught harmony and piano at the Lysenko Institute in Lviv, and from 1940 to 1944, lectured at the Lviv State Conservatory. Fleeing from the Soviets, Turkewich immigrated to England with her second husband in 1946. There she spent much of her time composing, but many of her works have never been performed. When they are not post-romantic, atonal or expressionistic in character, her compositions are stylistically much more modern yet still hark back to Ukrainian folk songs.
