Ukrainian Art Song
Summer Institute, Update

Meet the participants

Dear Friends,

Preparations for the 4th Ukrainian Art Song Summer Institute August 24 – 28, 2022 at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto is well underway.  This 4th Summer Institute has generated much interest and we excited with the program planned for this year. Our faculty brings a wealth of experience and talent to the program allowing both emerging and established artists to share their interpretations of Ukrainian art songs with you, at the closing performance on August 28th.

The first phase of the publication of the 4th Anthology of Ukrainian art songs is almost complete. The Anthology will include scores, poetry (Ukrainian and English), Ukrainian translations and transliterations, pronunciation charts, composer biographies as well as online recorded piano accompaniment and diction recordings. For our Summer Institute, we will have a prototype for all students and faculty to use and provide us with feedback before we begin the second phase of this publication. Our goal is to find a publisher who will produce and distribute this anthology throughout the music world. It is more important now than ever to have our beautiful Ukrainian art songs performed on the world stage.

Our fall plans include the return of our popular Salons so that once again, you, the audience may enjoy live performances of Ukraine’s beautiful art songs.

Maxim Tarnawsky, guest lecturer

We are pleased to announce that Professor Maxim Tarnawsky has agreed to join our faculty as guest lecturer for the 4th Ukrainian Art Song Summer Institute in August. He will give a talk to the students about the poems and poets who will be featured in this year's Summer Institute, examining their context, poetic style, and significance.

The Ukrainian Art Song Project

The Ukrainian Art Song Project and the Musica Leopolis recording label were founded in 2004 with the dream of acquiring and promoting the classical treasures of Ukrainian art song. The project is a ground-breaking initiative that aims to record and publish a veritable anthology of over 1,000 art songs by 26 of Ukraine’s greatest composers for distribution to the music world. Equally important is introducing Ukrainian art songs to students in international conservatories and Faculties of Music.

The label has recorded over 350 dramatic songs, many of them masterpieces, of composers such as Mykola Lysenko, Kyrylo Stetsenko, Yakiv Stepovyi, Stefania Turkewich and Vasyl Barvinsky. Musical scores are published on the Ukrainian Art Song Project website and can be downloaded free of charge.

This landmark project was envisioned and founded by Pavlo Hunka, acclaimed British bass-baritone, who teamed with Roman Hurko, composer and opera director, to produce the recordings. The project operates under the auspices of the Canadian Ukrainian Opera Association, a registered charity, whose objectives are to promote Ukrainian classical music in all forms including live performances and recordings. The Ukrainian Art Song Project is managed by a volunteer Board based in Toronto that is responsible for fulfilling the aims of the project and spearheading communication, fundraising and events.

The Ukrainian Art Song Project is supported by an international cast of artists and enthusiastic music lovers, and will leave an extraordinary musical legacy to the world. Imagine being part of this.

For our third Ukrainian Art Song Summer Institute, the Ukrainian Art Song Project presented “Muse.”  A poet, having lost his inspiration, retraces the paths of his life, striving to reawaken in himself the passion that once allowed him to create great works of art. He sets off on an arduous journey of discovery to experience as many moments of life as possible – some most enjoyable, some quite horrific.  Whether or not he succeeds in reclaiming his muse is a question answered by the audience who enjoyed the poems of Oleksandr Oles which, together with Myroslav Volynsky’s “Wagnerian” music and the compositions of Mykola Lysenko, Yakiv Stepovyi and Marko Kropyvnytskyi, which offered a depth of emotions that revealed a stark truth.

This final recital was held August 2019, at the Temerty Theatre at the Royal Conservatory's TELUS Centre For Performance and Learning, Toronto, Canada.
